Museum Juan Pablo Duarte. (Museo Juan Pablo Duarte)

C. Isabel La Católica # 304, Santo Domingo 10212

Juan Pablo Duarte was born in this one-story mid-18th century house on 26 January 1813. He died on 15 July 1876 in Caracas, Venezuela. For his achievements on behalf of the Dominican Republic, he is known as Padre de la Patria” (Father of the Country). His remains are interred at Altar de la Patria in Santo Domingo’s Parque Independencia.

Duarte was a well-educated son of a Santo Domingo merchant. He loved school and studied in New York, London and Paris, and lived for a time in Barcelona, Spain.

As a staunch patriot, he resented Haiti’s presence in his country. That patriotism led him to work with other independistas in a secret organization called La Trinitaria. His involvement

led to his imprisonment in a dungeon at Fortaleza Ozama until he was released in 1836. The country finally gains its independence from Haiti in 1844 after a 22-year occupation.

Museo Casa Duarte contains personal relics and biographical references, including furniture and items from La Trinitaria, that trace the life of the independence fighter and his family.
